Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has argued that migrant workers in the UK should only be employed on time-specific work permits. Speaking on BBC Politics East, the Clacton MP claimed that while care home workers are “necessary,” they should not be granted indefinite stay in the country. He suggested that if the UK truly cannot fill care jobs domestically, migrant workers should be hired under contracts without access to healthcare or social benefits.

Farage criticized the current system, stating that allowing indefinite leave to remain leads to extended family migration, which he believes has contributed to the UK’s immigration challenges. However, his remarks faced strong opposition from other political figures. Liberal Democrat MP Charlotte Cane rejected the idea that care work is not skilled, emphasizing the dedication and expertise required for the role. She stressed the need to respect migrant workers and pay them fairly, highlighting the struggles in recruiting enough caregivers to meet demand.

Labour MP Jack Abbott also pushed back against Farage’s comments, pointing to low wages as a key factor behind the social care sector’s workforce shortages. He announced that Labour plans to establish a pay review body to ensure fair wages for care workers, acknowledging the physically demanding nature of the job. Abbott argued that improving pay would help with recruitment and retention, ultimately strengthening the sector.

The discussion took place on a panel featuring Cane, Abbott, and Tom Pursglove, the former Conservative immigration minister. Cane reaffirmed that the UK should be grateful for migrant caregivers who contribute significantly to society, adding that their work is highly skilled and vital to many vulnerable people.

The debate highlights the ongoing political divide over immigration policies and the role of migrant workers in essential industries. While Farage continues to advocate for stricter regulations, other politicians insist on better recognition and compensation for those working in the care sector.
