A fire erupted on a carnival float in Kehl, southwest Germany, disrupting a festive atmosphere during a parade celebrating Fastnacht, the local carnival tradition. The incident, dubbed the Carnival Float Fire, occurred on Sunday afternoon, injuring at least five people, one of whom suffered serious burns. Local authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, casting a shadow over the otherwise joyous festivities.

The carnival parade, a hallmark of Fastnacht celebrations, was in full swing in Kehl when the unexpected disaster struck at 3 p.m. local time. Tens of thousands of spectators had gathered along the parade route to enjoy the colorful floats and lively procession. However, the mood quickly soured as flames engulfed one of the floats, sparking panic among the crowd.

Several individuals aboard the ill-fated float were forced to jump to safety as the fire rapidly spread. Emergency services responded swiftly to contain the blaze, but not before it caused injuries and disrupted the festivities. One individual, critically injured with severe burns, required immediate airlifting to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Authorities promptly intervened to extinguish the fire and secure the area, ensuring participant and spectator safety. However, the sudden parade halt dampened celebrations, shocking organizers and attendees. Police are investigating the fire’s cause to determine if it was accidental or intentional.

Carnival, a cherished tradition in Germany, particularly in Catholic regions, is known for its lively festivities and grand parades. Fastnacht, the local version of carnival, ends with a week-long celebration before the start of Lent. The incident in Kehl is a stark reminder of the risks during carnival.
