Since the Taliban’s ban on girls attending secondary school and university on September 18, 2021, over 40 Afghan girls have relocated to Rwanda to pursue their education. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on June 14, 2024, that these students began their studies in Rwanda in early 2023, marking a significant milestone in their educational journey.

Despite the Taliban’s prohibition leaving over a million girls without access to education, this relocation initiative offers a beacon of hope. The IOM’s Chief of Mission in Rwanda, Ash Carl, emphasized that the success of these girls demonstrates the transformative power of education, even in the most challenging circumstances.

The collaboration between the School of Leadership, Afghanistan (SOLA) and IOM began in 2023. Under this agreement, new students receive travel assistance to Rwanda to continue their education at SOLA’s campus. Shabana Basij-Rasikh, SOLA’s Co-Founder, highlighted the initiative as a counter-narrative to the oppression faced by Afghan girls, emphasizing the importance of investing in their education and future.

The experience of these girls in Rwanda has been life-changing. One student reflected on her time at SOLA, describing it as a transformative experience filled with support and community. Over 100 Afghan female scholars who arrived in 2021 now mentor new students, helping them navigate the academic and social challenges of their new environment.

This initiative is not just about relocating students; it’s about fostering future leaders. SOLA’s growing community in Rwanda has received over 2,000 applications for the incoming class of 2024, showcasing the high demand for educational opportunities among Afghan girls. SOLA encourages applications from girls passionate about leadership and education, providing information through its website and offering free education via its digital platform, SOLAx.

The IOM remains committed to supporting these educational pathways, reaffirming its dedication to creating opportunities for Afghan girls. This initiative is a powerful testament to the resilience and determination of these young women, who continue to strive for a brighter future despite the challenges they face.
