Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced that Navy ships will be sent near Libya’s waters to watch for migrant boats. He said this is a precaution to stop smugglers from deciding who enters Greece. The plan will be carried out with the support of Libya and European countries. The announcement was made on June 23, 2025, during a regular meeting with President Costas Tasoulas in Athens. Mitsotakis said that he asked the Minister of National Defense and the Armed Forces to begin the mission soon. He also plans to speak about the issue during the EU Summit. “We must…
A U.S. judge has ordered Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran migrant accused of smuggling people into the U.S., to be released on bail while he waits for his trial. The ruling was made on Sunday, June 22, by Judge Barbara Holmes in Nashville, Tennessee. Abrego, who lives in Maryland and whose wife and child are U.S. citizens, was wrongfully deported to El Salvador in March, despite a previous immigration court order that he should not be sent there. The court had ruled in 2019 that he could face gang persecution if returned. He was only brought back to the United…
A large wildfire has forced more than 600 asylum seekers to evacuate from a migrant camp on the Greek island of Chios, according to the Greek migration ministry. The fire broke out on Sunday, June 22, near the Closed Controlled Access Center (CCAC), also known as the Vial Reception and Identification Centre. A total of 629 asylum seekers were safely moved to a local sports hall, where they will stay for now. At the same time, at least 16 villages on the island were also evacuated due to heavy smoke and the fast spread of the fire. Firefighters worked hard…
Palermo judges have ruled that Spain, not Italy, was the country responsible for offering a safe port to the Open Arms rescue ship carrying migrants in August 2019. This decision clears Italy’s former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini of criminal charges linked to blocking the ship from docking in Italy. The judges said Spain should have taken responsibility for the migrant ship Open Arms, which carried around 100 people rescued at sea. The ship is Spanish, and the judges believe Spain had the legal duty to assign a port, not Italy. Because of this, Salvini was acquitted of charges of neglect…
The man behind Australia’s tough migrant policy, Alexander Downer, has called on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to bring back the Rwanda deportation scheme. Downer, who served as Australia’s foreign minister from 1996 to 2007, said the UK should not have scrapped the plan and that it could still work if the legal problems were fixed. Prime Minister Starmer ended the £700 million Rwanda scheme last year, calling it a political “gimmick” that failed to stop people arriving in small boats. But Downer believes removing the policy was a mistake. He told The Sun that the government should “eat a…

New York City has signed a new $1 billion deal with hotels to continue giving emergency shelter to migrants and homeless people. The city says this move is still needed, even though officials claim the migrant crisis is slowing down. The agreement allows hotel rooms to be used as shelters through June 2026. This no-bid contract means the city didn’t allow other hotel groups to compete. Instead, the deal was made directly with the Hotel Association of New York City Foundation. The group will help the city find hotels willing to provide rooms in exchange for rent payments. According to…
More than 350 migrants were rescued from a fishing boat near the Greek island of Gavdos on Thursday night, according to the Greek Coast Guard. The rescue happened about 30 nautical miles south of the island, which is located off the southern tip of Crete. The boat was first spotted by a vessel from Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. Frontex quickly contacted the Greek Coast Guard to alert them of the situation. The Coast Guard then launched a rescue operation. Four commercial ships that were sailing nearby also joined the rescue effort. Together, they helped bring all…
India’s inter-state migrant workers often face serious problems, but their issues are not taken seriously. These workers leave their home states, like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, to find jobs in places such as Punjab. However, when a crisis occurs, such as the recent India-Pakistan tension or natural disasters linked to climate change, they are often the first to suffer. In May this year, during a tense situation between India and Pakistan, many workers in Ludhiana started going back to their villages. People were scared because of drone attacks, missiles, and blackout orders. Social media posts showed that many workers were…
In a major shift at the southern US border, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has reported that not a single undocumented migrant was released into the United States in May 2025, marking a historic change in immigration enforcement. The report also showed a 93% decrease in illegal border crossings compared to the same month last year. According to data from CBP, only 8,725 migrants were encountered trying to cross the US-Mexico border in May 2025. This is a sharp drop from more than 130,000 migrants in May 2024. Acting CBP Commissioner Pete Flores called this the fastest and most effective…
