Spanish lawmakers have approved a new plan to help thousands of underage migrants who are currently living in crowded centers, mainly on the Canary Islands. These centers are struggling to handle the large number of young migrants arriving in recent years. The Canary Islands, located off the northwest coast of Africa, are currently hosting more than 6,000 migrant children and teenagers. In the nearby Spanish enclave of Ceuta, over 800 underage migrants are staying in similarly poor conditions. Many of these centers are overcrowded and do not meet proper living standards. Even though the number of irregular migrants has dropped…
Italy has moved 40 migrants to Albania after deciding they could not stay in the country. These migrants, who do not have permission to remain in Italy, were sent to Italian-run detention centers located in Albania. This is the first time a European Union (EU) country has transferred migrants to a non-EU country that is not their home or a country they passed through. The migrants reportedly left from the Italian port of Brindisi. Italian authorities have not shared their nationalities or given more information. The two centers they were taken to are located in the Albanian towns of Shengjin…

Many people applied for different types of visas, including work visas, study visas, and family visas, but numbers dropped in all categories. The biggest fall was in applications from family members of international students. This group saw an 83 percent decrease, showing that far fewer students are now bringing their relatives with them to the UK. Just a year ago, visa applications were at an all-time high, with 906,000 applications. But this year, the number dropped sharply. Experts believe this happened because of tougher immigration rules that were introduced in 2024 by the former Conservative Government. One of the biggest…
A top legal advisor from the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has supported the Italian government’s deal with Albania to process asylum seekers outside of the country. This deal, known as the Italy-Albania Protocol, allows Italy to send some migrants to Albania while their asylum requests are being reviewed. The advisor, Advocate General Jean Richard de la Tour, said on Thursday that EU law allows a country to send migrants to a third country, even if that place may not be safe for every person. His opinion is not final, but the EU Court often agrees with the Advocate General’s…
In a rare and notable decision, the US Supreme Court has ordered the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man who was wrongly deported to El Salvador despite legal protections. The court’s ruling came after the Department of Justice admitted that Garcia’s removal from the US was a result of an “administrative error.” Garcia, 29, had been living in Maryland under protected legal status since 2019. He was deported last month and placed in El Salvador’s high-security CECOT prison, a facility known for detaining suspected gang members. His removal was part of a broader immigration crackdown under former President…
The city council of Riace, a small town in southern Italy, has voted against a request to disqualify its mayor, Domenico “Mimmo” Lucano. The request came from the prefect’s office in Reggio Calabria, which wanted Lucano removed from office over a past legal case. But on April 8, the council rejected the request through a majority vote. Lucano, a well-known politician and activist, has been in the spotlight for his support of migrant rights. His legal troubles began in 2017, when he was accused of abusing public office and committing fraud. Although he was first sentenced to 13 years in…
The Advisory Council on Migration in the Netherlands has advised that employers should pay for Dutch language lessons for migrant workers. The council says that this would help migrants better integrate into Dutch society and improve their job opportunities. The call for action comes as new data shows that more than one-third of foreign workers stay in the Netherlands for more than five years. The Council, which gives independent advice to the government, explained that workers who move to the Netherlands from other countries often find it hard to adjust and settle in if they don’t speak Dutch. Many of…
Greece is at risk of losing funding from the European Union as Frontex, the EU’s border agency, investigates 12 cases of potential human rights violations linked to Greek migration authorities. This number of investigations is the highest for any EU country, as reported by Politico. The majority of these cases involve allegations of illegal pushbacks—a practice where migrants are forcibly removed at sea or land borders without proper legal process. Pushbacks are prohibited under the U.N. Refugee Convention and international law. A spokesperson from Frontex, Chris Borowski, stated that the agency expects Greece to follow through on recommendations made after…
