Officials from Belarus and the International Organization for Migration have discussed measures to improve coordination in case the number of migrants arriving at the country’s borders increases. The talks took place during a two-day meeting of a technical expert group held in the Minsk Region.
The meeting was organized as part of an international assistance project designed to strengthen the capacity of the State Border Committee of Belarus to manage potential migration pressures. The initiative is being implemented by the International Organization for Migration in cooperation with Belarusian authorities.
Participants at the meeting included representatives from several government bodies, such as the Interior Ministry, the Emergencies Ministry, and the Health Ministry, alongside officials from the migration agency’s office in Belarus. Discussions focused on improving preparedness and coordination if migrant arrivals at the border rise.
During the sessions, experts reviewed the results of an analytical study of Belarusian legislation related to migration management. They also examined practical mechanisms that could help authorities respond quickly if there is a sudden increase in migrants crossing into the country.
One key outcome of the meeting was the start of drafting an interagency regulatory document. The document is expected to outline how different government agencies should coordinate their actions during situations involving a large number of migrants arriving at the border.
Officials also paid close attention to improving risk analysis and strengthening early warning systems. These measures aim to help authorities identify potential migration pressures early and respond more effectively before situations escalate.
Another major topic was the need for better coordination when dealing with migrants who have special needs, including vulnerable groups requiring medical care or humanitarian assistance. Participants discussed ways to ensure that appropriate support services can be provided when necessary.
The meeting highlights ongoing efforts by Belarus and international partners to improve migration management and preparedness. Authorities say stronger cooperation between agencies will help ensure a more coordinated response if migrant flows increase in the future.
