Elon Musk’s recent comments on Italy’s migrant detention case have led to strong reactions from Italian politicians. On Monday, after the Court of Rome decided to stop the detention of seven migrants who were being sent to Albania for processing, Musk expressed his frustration on his social media platform, X, saying, “These judges have to go.” This comment quickly caught attention and sparked a debate on whether Musk was overstepping his bounds by criticizing Italy’s judicial system.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO’s comment came shortly before he was named by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as co-chair of the new “Department of Government Efficiency.” His statement caused a strong response in Italy, with several leaders either supporting or opposing his view.

Matteo Salvini, Italy’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport and leader of the League party, agreed with Musk. Salvini stated, “Elon Musk is right,” noting that he himself could face prison time for blocking migrant arrivals during his term as Minister of the Interior. He suggested that Musk’s comment highlighted the difficult situation in Italy regarding strict immigration controls.

On the other hand, many Italian leaders condemned Musk’s comment. Simona Bonafè, from the Democratic Party, criticized Musk for trying to influence Italian judges. She argued that his words showed a lack of understanding and respect for Italy’s legal system. Bonafè added that Musk’s comment was an unacceptable interference in Italy’s internal affairs.

Sandro Gozi, a Member of the European Parliament from Renew Europe, also criticized Musk’s involvement. Gozi stated that Italy does not need advice on democracy from Musk. He suggested that Musk should focus on his work in technology rather than trying to influence Italy’s democratic systems, such as the judiciary.

Angelo Bonelli, an MEP for Green Europe, echoed these concerns. He warned that Musk’s increasing wealth and power could harm democracy, claiming that Musk’s influence, especially with his social media platform and satellites, is concerning. Bonelli urged the Italian prime minister to speak out against Musk’s remarks to show support for Italy’s constitution and legal system.

The case that triggered Musk’s comments involves Italy’s agreement with Albania to process migrants outside of Italian borders. Recently, Italy’s courts blocked the detention orders for seven migrants sent to Albania. This is the second time Italy’s courts have stopped a government attempt to handle asylum cases outside Italy.

The Italian government recently updated a list of “safe countries,” including places like Egypt and Bangladesh, to make it easier to deport migrants from these nations. However, the courts’ decisions have made it harder for the government to carry out these plans, as EU laws still protect asylum seekers’ rights.

Musk’s comments have added more tension to the ongoing debate about migrant policies in Italy. The reaction to his statements has raised larger questions about how tech billionaires like Musk might influence politics worldwide. For Italy, this event highlights the struggle between enforcing national immigration policies and respecting judicial independence, as well as the challenges posed by outside voices commenting on internal matters.
