The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has announced a new partnership with the LALIGA FOUNDATION to help migrant youth in Peru integrate into society through soccer and leadership training. This initiative was launched during the first official visit of IOM Director General Amy Pope to the country, highlighting the importance of using sports as a tool for social inclusion and community building.

During her visit, Pope emphasized that migrant integration is not just about humanitarian aid but also about creating stronger societies. She noted that sports, especially soccer, can bring people together and help young migrants and Peruvians connect, learn teamwork, and develop leadership skills. Through this initiative, both migrant and local youth will have a chance to build friendships and gain important life skills that go beyond the game.

The partnership builds on the success of El Balón No Tiene Fronteras (Soccer Has No Borders), an IOM program that has supported more than 1,600 children and teens in Peru since 2019. The new initiative, backed by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), aims to expand its reach by organizing soccer clinics, leadership training, and community events. LALIGA coaches will work with students to promote values like respect, teamwork, and inclusion, while IOM will collaborate with the Ministry of Education to ensure long-term impact in public schools with a high number of migrant students.

As part of her visit, Pope met with President Dina Boluarte and Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzén to discuss how migration programs can support Peru’s national development. She also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strengthen cooperation in assisting migrants in Peru, Peruvians abroad, and returning citizens. These efforts aim to improve migration policies and create more opportunities for both migrants and locals.

Pope also visited the Central Orientation and Assistance Point (PAO) in southern Lima, where IOM provides direct support to migrants. Since August 2024, more than 7,000 migrants have received assistance at the center, including legal advice, healthcare access, and psychosocial support. This visit reinforced IOM’s commitment to ensuring that migrants have the resources they need to settle and thrive in Peru.

The partnership between IOM and LALIGA FOUNDATION serves as a model for using sports to promote migrant integration. By working together with governments, organizations, and the private sector, this initiative is creating sustainable solutions for social inclusion. As the program expands, IOM remains dedicated to empowering migrant communities and ensuring they have opportunities to succeed in their new homes.
