A tragic incident unfolded in Kinathukadavu, near Coimbatore, as a 21-year-old migrant worker from Madhya Pradesh was beaten to death during a birthday celebration late Saturday night. The victim, B. Bhupendra, was allegedly attacked by three of his co-workers following a heated argument that escalated under the influence of alcohol.
According to the police, Bhupendra, along with the three accused—two minors and 20-year-old P. Saurabh—were employed at an LPG filling station. They all resided in the employees’ quarters in Arasampalayam, near Kinathukadavu. The incident took place during a birthday party for one of the accused, where liquor was being served. Around 10 p.m., an argument broke out between Bhupendra and the others. The situation quickly turned violent, and the three individuals reportedly assaulted him with an iron rod, leading to his death on the spot.
Upon receiving information about the incident, the Kinathukadavu police arrived at the scene and transported Bhupendra’s body to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. The authorities registered a case based on a complaint filed by another migrant worker, D. Anand, 22, who also hails from Madhya Pradesh.
Following an investigation, the police arrested the three accused on Sunday. The incident has raised concerns over the safety of migrant workers living in shared accommodations and the rising instances of alcohol-related violence.
Despite being far from home in search of work, migrant workers often find themselves vulnerable to conflicts and crime. The authorities are urging employers and worker communities to ensure better conflict resolution measures and stricter rules regarding alcohol consumption in shared living spaces.
