A new alliance between NGOs operating on the mainland and at sea to support migrants, called the Freedom of Movement Solidarity Network, was presented in Rome on May 15th 2024. The network aims to provide assistance to individuals along migration routes, whether on roads, at sea, or in other challenging terrains.

The launch event, held at the Foreign Press Association, featured representatives from various associations, including Baobab Experience, Bozen Solidale, and Sea-Watch, among others. Notable attendees included Piero Gorza, Andrea Costa, Alice Basiglini, and David Yambio.

Andrea Costa, president of Baobab Experience, emphasized the importance of solidarity in supporting migrants, stating that the network represents a collaborative effort to aid those in need. He highlighted the significance of joint action, particularly in light of the EU’s migration policies and the upcoming European elections.

The network’s objectives were further underscored by Piero Gorza, a member of On Borders, who emphasized the need to challenge the EU’s securitarian policies and promote alternative approaches to migration.

Criticism of EU policies was echoed by Luca Morelli of Sea-Watch, who denounced the EU’s role in promoting securitarian agendas and externalization of migration control. He called for the creation of a new model that prioritizes the protection and support of migrants’ journeys.

David Yambio, spokesperson for Refugees in Libya, highlighted the dire consequences of European policies in countries like Tunisia and Libya, where migrants are subjected to harsh conditions and lack access to information and support.

Alice Basiglini, spokesperson of Baobab Experience, emphasized the network’s commitment to upholding the freedom of movement as a universal right. She criticized current EU policies for fueling human trafficking and called for the establishment of safe passages for migrants.

In conclusion, the launch of the Freedom of Movement Solidarity Network signifies a collective effort by NGOs to support migrants and challenge restrictive European policies.
