The Vatican has announced that the 2026 World Day of Migrants and Refugees will focus on the protection of children affected by migration.

According to Vatican News, Pope Leo XIV has chosen the theme “Even just one of these children” for the 112th edition of the global observance, scheduled for September 27, 2026.

The theme is drawn from the Gospel of Matthew (18:5), which teaches that welcoming a child is an act of welcoming Christ. It reflects the Church’s message on the dignity and value of every child, especially those impacted by migration.

The announcement was made on April 9 by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, the body responsible for organizing the annual event.

In a statement, the dicastery explained that the theme shows the Church’s deep concern for migrant children and reminds people of their responsibility to protect and care for them.

It also noted that while migration has been a long-standing issue, today’s global situation presents new and urgent challenges. Many children on the move face serious risks, including exploitation, displacement, and lack of access to basic rights such as education and healthcare.

Pope Leo XIV is expected to release a full message ahead of the event, providing more guidance and reflection on the theme.

By focusing on “even just one” child, the Church is urging individuals and governments to look beyond numbers and respond with compassion and real action to support vulnerable children.
