The Modern Slavery and Exploitation Helpline in the UK, operated by the charity Unseen, has reported a staggering increase in calls in 2023, marking a concerning trend of rising exploitation and abuse.

According to Unseen, the helpline received a record number of calls in 2023, marking the fourth consecutive year of increase. The figures reveal a 19 percent rise, with calls soaring from 9,779 in 2022 to 11,700 in 2023.

The surge in calls coincides with a disturbing 30 percent increase in potential victims identified within the UK adult social care sector, reflecting the pervasive nature of modern slavery and exploitation.

Director of Unseen, Justine Carter, expressed encouragement at the growing awareness of the issue, attributing the rise in calls to heightened awareness and mobilization efforts. However, she emphasized the urgent need to combat these “heinous crimes” that have no place in a progressive society that values human rights.

Unseen’s annual assessment also revealed an 11 percent increase in labor abuse cases and a 21 percent rise in potential victims of criminal exploitation. However, cases of sexual exploitation saw a 33 percent decrease, although the number of potential victims remained consistent.

Of particular concern is the emerging trend of forced surrogacy, with Unseen reporting cases involving individuals coerced into carrying pregnancies for others. This alarming development underscores the need for robust measures to address the evolving tactics of exploitation.

The data also highlighted the diverse origins of potential victims, with individuals from 106 different countries identified as victims of modern slavery. India topped the list for the first time, followed by Romanians, Albanians, Vietnamese, and Chinese nationals.

Despite efforts to combat modern slavery, challenges remain in encouraging victims to come forward and providing adequate support. The UK government reaffirmed its commitment to addressing this “barbaric crime” and ensuring support for victims.

The findings from Unseen’s helpline serve as crucial insights for policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and businesses to inform anti-slavery strategies and safeguard vulnerable individuals.

If you suspect modern slavery or exploitation, do not hesitate to contact the helpline at 08000121700. Calls are free, and support is available 24/7, 365 days a year.
