UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over airstrikes that hit a detention centre for African migrants in Yemen. His reaction comes after reports confirmed the attack, which has raised serious alarm at the United Nations.

Speaking through his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, Guterres said the strikes are a growing danger to civilians in the country. The UN is calling on all involved in the conflict to follow international humanitarian law and protect innocent people.

“These strikes pose a rising threat to the civilian population in Yemen,” said Dujarric. “We continue to urge all parties to respect their legal obligations, especially the need to protect civilians.”

Yemen has long been a dangerous place for migrants, especially those from African countries trying to reach safer areas. Many are held in detention centres under poor conditions, often near areas affected by war.

The airstrike reportedly hit one of these facilities, where many migrants were being held. The number of casualties is not yet confirmed, but human rights groups are worried about the safety of those inside.

The UN has already been working on aid and protection for migrants and refugees in Yemen, but attacks like this make the work even harder. Guterres’ statement shows how serious the situation is becoming.

The conflict in Yemen, which has lasted for years, continues to affect civilians, migrants, and aid workers. Attacks on shelters, detention centres, and hospitals are against international law and can be considered war crimes.

What is the UN saying about the Yemen migrant centre strike?
The UN is alarmed by the strike on a migrant detention centre in Yemen and urges all parties to protect civilians under international law.
