On July 23, 2024, Latvian border guards stopped a Chrysler Grand Voyager in the Augšdaugava municipality. The car was driven by a Latvian citizen, and during a document check, it was discovered that another Latvian citizen was in the passenger seat. Inside the cabin, there were 16 people who did not have travel documents, valid visas, or residence permits.
Shortly after this discovery, the investigation led to the detention of two more Latvian citizens. These individuals were found in a homestead in the Augšdaugava region and were suspected of helping the migrants. During a search of the homestead, authorities found 11 additional people in the basement. Like the others, these individuals did not have the necessary travel documents, visas, or residence permits.
Criminal proceedings have been started against the Latvian citizens for knowingly allowing people to stay illegally in Latvia. This crime, when committed by an organized group, is punishable by two to eight years of imprisonment according to Article 285(1)(3) of the Criminal Law.
The actions of these individuals have serious legal consequences. Providing support to people who are staying in the country illegally is a significant offense. The law aims to prevent such activities, ensuring that everyone in the country has the proper documentation and legal status. The case highlights the ongoing efforts by Latvian authorities to control illegal migration and enforce the law.
