Bahrain is actively supporting nations that host migrants by promoting international cooperation and humanitarian assistance. Dalal Jassim Al Zayed, Chairperson of the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee in the Shura Council, recently participated in a video conference organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in collaboration with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. This meeting focused on enhancing how societies manage the influx of migrants compelled to leave their home countries for various reasons, especially in light of increasing discrimination and hatred faced by migrants worldwide.

During the conference, Al Zayed underscored Bahrain’s commitment to its policies, which have garnered international recognition under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. She emphasized that Bahrain promotes peaceful coexistence and actively combats hatred. This commitment is reflected in the Kingdom’s adherence to international treaties and laws, which have bolstered its global standing in support of initiatives that foster peace and mutual respect.

Bahrain’s dedication to international humanitarian law plays a crucial role in its efforts to assist countries hosting migrants. Al Zayed reiterated that Bahrain aims to provide humanitarian support and cooperation to enhance the living conditions of migrants, aligning with the principles of international law. This cooperative approach emphasizes the importance of countries working together to safeguard the rights of those who are displaced.

Highlighting Bahrain’s favorable reputation among expatriates, Al Zayed noted that the Kingdom ranks as one of the best destinations for migrant workers. Factors contributing to this status include affordable housing, accessible visa processes, efficient banking services, and the adoption of electronic payments. The welcoming and secure environment in Bahrain, along with laws ensuring fair treatment and safe working conditions, significantly protects the rights of migrant workers.

Al Zayed further stressed the necessity for host countries to enhance their legislative frameworks, focusing on better protection for migrants and refugees. She called for the amendment of existing laws to safeguard vulnerable populations effectively. The chairperson also pointed to the importance of sharing successful policies and best practices across nations to combat xenophobia and promote inclusivity.

The meeting gathered parliamentary experts who exchanged insights and recommendations on addressing xenophobia and discrimination against migrants. Participants discussed the legal protections essential for safeguarding migrants’ human rights and explored the possibility of adopting formal guidelines by the UN Committee on the Protection of Migrant Workers and the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Moreover, the role of legislators was emphasized as critical in addressing challenges related to xenophobia and migrant rights. Collaboration with the UN and various stakeholders was deemed essential in supporting the Migrant Workers’ Rights Convention and advocating for its ratification. The discussions aimed to inspire a collaborative effort toward establishing migrant-friendly policies worldwide.

The meeting concluded with a focus on adopting best practices and recommendations to protect the rights of migrants and foreigners. These guidelines will be jointly endorsed by the UN Committees on Migrant Workers and the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, further solidifying the commitment to ensuring the well-being and dignity of migrants globally.
