Egypt and the European Union (EU) have committed to enhancing their cooperation in addressing illegal migration and human trafficking. During discussions in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson agreed to intensify their joint efforts, according to a recent statement. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of creating legal migration pathways and raising awareness about the risks of irregular migration.
Johansson praised Egypt’s ongoing efforts in hosting over nine million migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, and reaffirmed the EU’s support in assisting Egypt with these challenges. The two sides highlighted the need to adopt a comprehensive approach that ties migration to development, aiming to tackle the root causes of irregular migration. They also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation on border management and combating criminal networks involved in human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
Both Egypt and the EU reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the human rights of migrants and refugees, in line with international law. Additionally, the officials discussed facilitating the dignified return, readmission, and reintegration of Egyptian citizens who are irregularly residing in EU countries. The meeting shows the deepening partnership between Egypt and the EU in tackling migration-related issues and ensuring the protection of vulnerable populations.
