On Friday August 2, 2024, , Lithuanian police detained forty irregular migrants in Utena County after they crossed the border from Latvia. The arrests took place when the police intercepted two vans in the town of Daugailiai and the village of Vaikutenai. These vehicles were carrying a total of 43 migrants.

The operation, detailed by the Baltic News Service, involved a coordinated effort by the Utena District Police to halt the illegal entry of migrants into Lithuania. Upon stopping the two vans, officers discovered the 43 individuals who had entered the country without proper documentation. Unfortunately, three of these migrants managed to evade capture and remain at large.

During the detention process, two police officers sustained minor injuries, highlighting the risks and challenges law enforcement faces in handling such situations. The specifics of the injuries were not disclosed, but the officers are reported to be recovering.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges with irregular migration in the Baltic region. The influx of migrants seeking entry into European Union countries through non-traditional routes has placed significant pressure on border security and law enforcement agencies. Lithuania, sharing borders with Latvia and Belarus, has been a notable entry point for migrants trying to reach Western Europe.

The authorities have launched an active search for the three escaped individuals. Enhanced patrols and checkpoints have been established in the region to locate and apprehend the fugitives. The police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities or sightings that could aid in the capture of the remaining migrants.

In response to the incident, Lithuanian officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining border security and addressing the complexities of irregular migration. This includes cooperation with neighboring countries and international agencies to strengthen border controls and ensure the humane treatment of migrants.

The incident in Utena County serves as a stark reminder of the broader migration issues facing Europe. It highlights the need for comprehensive policies and collaborative efforts to manage migration flows, protect borders, and uphold the rights and safety of all individuals involved
