A man in Guadalajara, Spain, has been arrested for deceiving young migrants from South America by offering them false opportunities to play professional football in Spain. The National Police revealed that the suspect exploited these individuals for profit, keeping them in overcrowded, unsanitary housing and charging them significant sums of money under false pretenses.

The accused allegedly led a criminal network with international ties that targeted vulnerable young people in South America. He convinced them to pay between €2,000 and €3,500 for what he claimed were expenses related to food, accommodation, and processes for residency regularization in Spain. The victims were promised professional football trials and, if unsuccessful, the chance to secure jobs and legal residency. None of these promises were fulfilled.

This arrest was part of ‘Operation Magreba,’ initiated in 2023 after complaints were filed by victims in Guadalajara. These young migrants reported being left in dire conditions without access to the opportunities they were promised. Investigations revealed that the suspect housed victims in cramped living spaces with other individuals in similar situations.

The National Police have also confirmed that the suspect was involved in similar crimes in 2019 and 2022 across three provinces in Spain. His actions violated Spanish laws on foreign residency, exploiting the desperation and hopes of vulnerable migrants for financial gain.

Several accomplices connected to the scheme remain at large, and authorities are actively pursuing their capture. The operation highlights the systemic exploitation faced by migrants and the challenges they encounter while seeking better opportunities abroad.

Victims of this scheme have been provided with assistance by the National Police, who informed them about humanitarian resources available through the Spanish State. Officials are also helping these individuals navigate the process of regularizing their residency status to ensure they avoid further exploitation and legal challenges.

This case shows the importance of vigilance and the need for stronger measures to protect migrants from falling prey to fraudulent schemes. Authorities are urging potential victims to report similar incidents to prevent further exploitation and dismantle criminal networks targeting migrants.
