Norway’s foreign ministry has expressed concern after stating that it believes the Libyan coast guard fired upon a Norwegian-flagged rescue ship during a mission in the Mediterranean Sea. The vessel involved was the MV Ocean Viking, which is known for conducting search and rescue operations to save migrants attempting the dangerous sea journey to Europe.

According to the ministry, the incident happened on August 24 and created a serious risk for everyone on board, including the crew and rescued migrants. The Norwegian authorities described the event as deeply troubling, saying that lives could have been lost because of the shooting.

In its statement, the ministry explained that it has formally requested an investigation into the incident. It called on Libyan authorities to clarify what happened and to take firm measures that would ensure such an event does not occur again in the future. The statement emphasized that protecting the safety of humanitarian rescue ships and their crews is essential.

The Ocean Viking is operated by humanitarian groups and is frequently active in the central Mediterranean, where thousands of people fleeing conflict, poverty, and persecution attempt to cross toward Europe in small, unsafe boats. These rescue missions often save lives, but they also face challenges due to political tensions around migration.

For years, the Libyan coast guard has been tasked with stopping migrant boats under agreements supported by the European Union. However, its methods have been widely criticized by human rights groups, who argue that returning migrants to Libya exposes them to harsh conditions, abuse, and detention. The latest shooting incident has again raised concerns about how the Libyan coast guard interacts with international rescue ships.

Norway’s demand for an investigation highlights the seriousness of the matter. Officials in Oslo have made it clear that they expect accountability and reassurance that humanitarian vessels will not be targeted in the future. They also stressed that the safety of crews carrying out rescue work must be respected under international law.

The incident adds to the growing debate in Europe about the role of humanitarian rescue ships and the risks they face while operating in contested waters. Supporters argue that without them, many more migrants would drown at sea. Critics, however, claim that such missions encourage dangerous crossings.

At the center of this debate are the lives of migrants who continue to attempt the perilous journey across the Mediterranean. Despite the risks, thousands still set out in overcrowded boats every year, hoping for safety and a better future in Europe. Norway’s strong reaction to the August 24 shooting shows that countries remain deeply concerned about the dangers surrounding these rescue operations.
