Police have rejected online claims that a gang rape in Banbury was connected to migrant housing, saying there is no evidence to support such speculation. The attack happened overnight on Saturday in the grounds of St Mary’s church and around the town centre. The victim, a woman in her 30s, is being supported by specially trained officers.
Thames Valley police confirmed that one of the suspects was described as a white man, but added that no further verified descriptions of the group were available. A police statement stressed that rumours about the men’s ethnic background or links to migrant centres were unfounded and risked hindering the investigation.
The force also said clearly that “there is no information at this stage to link this investigation to migrant accommodation,” urging the public to avoid spreading speculation. Officers are instead appealing for witnesses who were in Banbury town centre between midnight and 2.30 am to come forward.
Detective Sergeant Mark Personius called the assault “a horrific crime” and assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to track down those responsible. Police are particularly keen to hear from a “good Samaritan” woman who reportedly tried to intervene during the attack.
The church cancelled its Sunday Eucharist following the incident. Reverend Serena Tajima said the congregation was “greatly saddened” and that their prayers were with the victim. She noted that the attack happened just hours after an early music festival had taken place at the church, making the incident feel even more shocking for the community.
