Texas lawmaker Brandon Gill recently sparked controversy by calling for the deportation of Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar after she shared advice for undocumented migrants. Gill, a Republican representing Texas’s 26th district, took to social media, stating, “America would be a better place if @IlhanMN were deported back to Somalia.” His remarks were in response to Omar’s recent advocacy for undocumented migrants on how to avoid deportation.

Omar, who came to the U.S. as a refugee in 1995 and became a naturalized citizen in 2000, has been vocal in her support for immigrants, particularly undocumented individuals. During a recent interview, she advised immigrants on how to handle interactions with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), emphasizing their right to remain silent and not disclose personal information without legal counsel.

Gill’s statement has provoked backlash from both sides of the political spectrum, with some calling for Omar’s removal from office, while others defend her right to offer legal advice. His spokesperson criticized Omar’s actions, claiming they raised questions about her loyalty to the American people. The controversy follows previous calls for Omar’s deportation, including one from Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The issue of immigration has been central to U.S. politics, especially under the leadership of President Trump. As part of his administration’s aggressive stance on immigration, deportations have been ramped up, with ICE focusing on arresting and removing individuals with criminal records. Despite criticism from figures like Elon Musk, who accused Omar of breaking the law, she has defended her actions, emphasizing that her legal advice aligns with Americans’ constitutional rights.

The debate around Omar’s advocacy highlights the deep divisions over immigration policy in the U.S., with growing calls from some quarters to hold elected officials accountable for their actions, especially when it involves issues as contentious as immigration law enforcement.
