Thailand has extended work permits for migrant workers from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar, allowing them more time to complete the necessary paperwork for long-term employment. The decision aims to help both workers and businesses by ensuring legal employment while preventing disruptions in industries that rely on foreign labour.
On 5 February, Thai Labour Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced that Vietnamese and Lao workers will be allowed to stay in Thailand for an extra three months, until 13 May 2025. This extension gives their employers more time to complete the required documents to extend their work permits. If the permit applications are successful, these workers will be able to continue working in Thailand until 13 February 2026.
Meanwhile, Cambodian and Myanmar workers have been granted a longer extension of six months, allowing them to stay in Thailand until 13 August 2025. This additional time will help their employers complete the necessary paperwork for work permit extensions. If their applications are approved, these workers can remain in Thailand until 13 February 2027. They may also have the option to extend their stay for another two years, depending on government policies and labour market needs.
Somchai Morakotsriwan, head of the Department of Labour, emphasised the importance of completing the application process on time. He urged employers, businesses, and migrant workers to submit the required documents before the 13 February deadline to avoid any delays or legal issues. The Thai government is working to streamline the process to ensure smooth and fair management of migrant workers.
