In a major shift at the southern US border, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has reported that not a single undocumented migrant was released into the United States in May 2025, marking a historic change in immigration enforcement. The report also showed a 93% decrease in illegal border crossings compared to the same month last year.

According to data from CBP, only 8,725 migrants were encountered trying to cross the US-Mexico border in May 2025. This is a sharp drop from more than 130,000 migrants in May 2024. Acting CBP Commissioner Pete Flores called this the fastest and most effective improvement in US border security history.

“This is a record-setting moment,” Flores stated. “In just one year, we have brought illegal crossings down significantly and ensured that no illegal migrants were released into the country.”

Just a year ago, over 62,000 undocumented migrants were released into the US under previous border processing procedures. These individuals were often given court dates or allowed to remain temporarily while their immigration cases were pending.

However, under new enforcement policies introduced in early 2025, the US government has tightened border control by increasing patrol presence, using new technology, and expanding cooperation with neighboring countries. These efforts have contributed to fewer crossings and stronger enforcement measures.

Officials said the improved border security is part of a broader effort by the Biden-Trump administration transition to address concerns over irregular migration, especially in border states like Texas, Arizona, and California.

The new system emphasizes detention or direct removal instead of release, particularly for individuals with no legal basis to remain in the US. This has led to faster processing and fewer delays, with migrants either turned back at the border or placed in formal detention if necessary.

Analysts suggest that the sharp drop in crossings is also related to increased military enforcement zones and tighter restrictions across traditional migrant routes. Additionally, partnerships with Mexico and Central American countries to curb smuggling operations have made it more difficult for migrants to even reach the border.

Although the numbers are historic, immigration advocates warn that strict policies must still ensure due process and human rights, especially for those fleeing violence or persecution.

Still, the May 2025 data shows a dramatic turnaround in how the US is managing its southern border. With summer months approaching, authorities say they will continue to monitor and adjust policies to keep illegal crossings low while ensuring legal migration pathways remain open.
