The treacherous journey to reach the Spanish enclave of Melilla from Morocco has claimed the lives of at least 32 individuals, including numerous minors, in the first quarter of 2024, according to a recent report by humanitarian organization Solidarity Wheels.

Despite ongoing efforts to stem the flow of desperate migrants, tragedies continue to unfold as individuals attempt to swim across the perilous waters to Melilla. The NGO’s report underscores the grim reality faced by those risking their lives in pursuit of a better future.

Solidarity Wheels, based in Melilla, highlighted the harrowing trend of minors’ bodies being recovered along the Moroccan coasts of Beni Ensar and within the confines of the Spanish enclave itself. The toll of lives lost underscores the urgent need for effective measures to prevent further migrant deaths.

Based on data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and various Moroccan sources, the survey conducted by the NGO revealed the distressing figure of 32 corpses recovered during the initial months of the year. Most of the deceased were young Moroccan minors, driven by desperation to undertake the perilous journey.

The treacherous route, requiring approximately eight hours of swimming in challenging conditions, is often attempted under the cover of darkness in hopes of evading detection by security forces patrolling the southern border of Europe.

Solidarity Wheels drew attention to the tragic “massacre” in June 2022, when dozens lost their lives attempting to scale the border barrier of Melilla. Since then, heightened security measures, including increased patrols, have been implemented along the border, exacerbating the risks faced by migrants.

Furthermore, the NGO highlighted the dire consequences of immediate repatriations and pushbacks, particularly concerning minors and asylum seekers intercepted in Spanish territorial waters. The lack of adequate rescue protocols and training for enforcing authorities exacerbates the dangers faced by vulnerable migrants, leaving them at the mercy of perilous sea crossings.

Amidst calls for urgent action to address the humanitarian crisis, Solidarity Wheels emphasized the need for a coordinated response to safeguard the lives and dignity of migrants seeking refuge in Melilla.
