A tragic discovery unfolded off the coast of Brazil as a drifting boat carrying nine decomposed bodies was found, raising concerns about the perils faced by migrants attempting the treacherous journey from Africa to Europe. Brazilian authorities, after inspecting the boat towed ashore by fishermen in the state of Pará, concluded that the victims were likely migrants from the African countries of Mauritania and Mali.
The boat’s journey, spanning over 2,600 miles from the Mauritanian coast, underscores the extreme risks associated with migration across the Atlantic. Many such vessels embark from Mauritania with the hope of reaching Europe, particularly Spain’s Canary Islands, which have witnessed a surge in migrant arrivals. So far this year, over 14,000 African migrants have made the perilous journey to the Spanish archipelago, a stark increase from previous years.
The circumstances surrounding the boat’s drift suggest that it veered off course, potentially due to unknown factors, leading the migrants away from their intended destination. Pushed by ocean currents, the boat traversed the vast expanse of the Atlantic, tragically resulting in the loss of lives of those on board. Brazilian authorities have not ruled out the possibility of other nationalities among the victims and are working to determine their gender and age.
Forensic analyses conducted by the Federal Police and the Scientific Police of Pará aim to identify the victims, ascertain the cause of death, and determine the timeline of the tragic incident. However, the advanced state of decomposition of the bodies poses significant challenges to the investigation. Eight of the bodies were found inside the boat, while one was discovered floating nearby, indicating they were part of the same group.
The boat’s characteristics, resembling Mauritanian fishing vessels known as dugout canoes or cayucos, align with the typical vessels used by migrants embarking on the perilous journey to the Canary Islands. This route from the west coast of Africa to Europe ranks among the most perilous, with hundreds of migrants perishing annually. The currents often push drifting boats away from Europe towards the Americas, increasing the likelihood of maritime tragedies.
The discovery of the drifting boat recalls previous incidents of migrant vessels washing up on Brazilian shores, highlighting the global nature of migration crises. Despite the remote location of the sighting, fishermen promptly alerted authorities, facilitating the retrieval of the boat and the victims.
