A housing project in Germany is helping refugees integrate into local communities by encouraging migrants and German residents to live together and share everyday experiences.
The “Houses of Hope” initiative, known in German as Hoffnungshaus, brings people from different nationalities, religions and generations under one roof. In Schwäbisch Gmünd, the project allows refugees and local residents to interact regularly while helping newcomers adjust to life in Germany.
Residents support one another with everyday challenges, including understanding German customs and navigating life in a new community. Supporters say these shared experiences help refugees develop a sense of belonging and reduce the isolation that can accompany migration.
The initiative also aims to strengthen relationships between migrants and local residents through regular personal contact, rather than keeping newcomers separated from the wider community.
Although some neighbours initially expressed concerns about the project, supporters say that living together and building relationships can help address misunderstandings and prevent social segregation.
The model offers an alternative approach to refugee integration by making shared housing a way to encourage social connections and community participation.
