Antonio Tajani, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, emphasized the significance of the joint project between Italy and Albania in managing migrant flows, stating that it plays a crucial role in addressing irregular migration. Tajani made these remarks during his visit to Pallagorio, Crotone province, alongside Albanian President Bajram Begaj, commemorating the centenary of the death of Anselmo Lorecchio, an Italian writer of the Arbereshe ethnic group.

Highlighting the project’s aim to counter the activities of human traffickers, Tajani underscored the importance of receiving regular migrants in Italy while stressing the need to combat traffickers and criminal organizations. He emphasized the strong economic and political ties between Italy and Albania, noting their partnership in NATO and expressing support for Albania’s EU accession.

Tajani expressed optimism about expediting Albania’s European integration process, reaffirming Italy’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. He emphasized the role of Arbereshe communities in Calabria as a diplomatic asset, serving as a bridge to other Albanian-speaking countries. Tajani urged collaboration from the Arbereshe people in fostering ties with Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia, highlighting the shared origins and language.

In promoting peace amid conflicts, Tajani invoked the example of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, emphasizing her Albanian heritage and role in advocating for peace globally. He concluded by urging messages of peace and solidarity, underscoring the importance of cultural and diplomatic exchanges in fostering international cooperation and understanding.
