Starting this July, several U.S. states have implemented new laws, some of which significantly impact undocumented migrants. The State of Washington has introduced a measure that allows undocumented immigrants to apply for professional state licenses and certifications. Previously, these could only be obtained with a social insurance number. Additionally, Illinois has begun issuing standard driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.

In contrast, Tennessee has enacted an anti-immigrant law requiring state law enforcement to communicate with federal immigration authorities if they discover individuals in the country illegally. This law mandates cooperation in identifying, detaining, and deporting such individuals. Meanwhile, Florida has increased penalties for driving without a valid or suspended license. Other states like California and Colorado have focused on housing legislation, and Washington D.C. has raised the minimum wage for workers.

California has also become the first jurisdiction to impose an 11% tax on firearms, ammunition, and spare parts to fund programs aimed at preventing gun violence and supporting gang intervention. The state has enacted a price transparency law banning hidden charges and ensuring that fees are refundable, with violators facing penalties. Only restaurants can charge extra amounts if clearly displayed on the menu. Additionally, new housing rules state that lease contracts signed after July 1 may only collect one month’s security deposit, with landlords allowed to charge more if damage exceeds the deposit.

In Illinois, undocumented immigrants can now obtain a standard driver’s license, which will serve as a valid form of identification. However, the card will bear the phrase “federal limits apply,” meaning it cannot be used for domestic flights or entering restricted government buildings.

Tennessee’s new law, which took effect this week, mandates that state law enforcement officials communicate with federal immigration authorities when they find individuals in the country illegally, joining states like Texas, Iowa, and Louisiana with similar legislation. In addition, students in Tennessee are now allowed to carry stun guns, tasers, or other means of personal defense for safety in the event of an attack or shooting.

Washington D.C. has increased the minimum wage for workers from $17 to $17.50 per hour, with tipped employees seeing their earnings rise from $8 to $10 per hour. The government has mandated that if an employee’s hourly tips, averaged weekly, do not meet the District’s minimum wage when added to their base wage, the employer must pay the difference.

Washington State’s new law allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for professional state licenses and certifications will benefit those in various fields such as construction, teaching, real estate, and caregiving. Applicants must have a valid tax identification number as part of the requirements under this new legislation.
