The Catholic Church in India has launched a new digital portal designed to support migrants throughout the country. This significant initiative was inaugurated by Cardinal Philip Neri Ferrão, President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) and Archbishop of Goa, along with other prominent church leaders. Integrated into the Catholic Connect platform, the portal aims to assist migrants seeking work, education, or those displaced from their homes, aligning with Pope Francis’s vision of welcoming and supporting migrants.

India is home to over 450 million internal migrants, many of whom encounter challenges such as displacement, exploitation, and difficulties accessing basic services. Recognizing these pressing issues, the Catholic Church’s initiative seeks to mitigate the hardships faced by these individuals by providing them with access to essential Church services. Through the portal, migrants will have the opportunity to register, while dioceses and parishes will facilitate the process, ensuring that trained volunteers from migrant communities can extend much-needed assistance to those in distress.

Fr. Adv. Jaison Vadassery, the Executive Secretary to the CCBI Commission for Migrants, highlighted the inclusive nature of this service, stating that it is available to everyone, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion. He emphasized that the portal is not just a resource for accessing services but also a tool for migrants to enroll in government schemes, obtain emergency support, and secure healthcare and educational opportunities for their children.

This initiative is designed to empower migrants by providing them with the resources they need to thrive in their host communities while maintaining connections to their cultural and religious identities. By facilitating access to critical services, the Church aims to promote social integration and support the well-being of migrants as they navigate their new environments.

Furthermore, the portal reflects the Church’s commitment to addressing the broader social issues that affect migrants, including their rights and dignity. By creating a platform for advocacy and support, the initiative also underscores the Church’s role in championing social justice and humanitarian efforts within the community.

As migrants face increasing challenges in an ever-changing socio-economic landscape, the Catholic Church’s new digital portal represents a vital step towards enhancing their resilience and fostering a sense of belonging. The initiative not only addresses immediate needs but also encourages long-term solutions for integrating migrants into society.

Overall, this digital initiative signifies the Church’s dedication to serving one of the most vulnerable populations in India, paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive environment for migrants across the country. By embracing this mission, the Catholic Church aims to uplift migrants and ensure that they receive the care and assistance they deserve.
