French authorities have placed a 36-year-old Syrian man in pre-trial detention after accusing him of leading a large migrant smuggling network that allegedly transported hundreds of people from the Middle East to France through South America.
According to the public prosecutor’s office in Épinal, eastern France, the investigation began in October 2025 after the anti-smuggling unit in Metz received intelligence about a suspected international smuggling operation. Investigators believe the network moved migrants from Syria through Turkey, Venezuela, and Brazil before taking them to French Guiana and eventually mainland France.
Prosecutor Frédéric Nahon said preliminary findings suggest the suspect, who lives in Épinal, led the operation between 2021 and 2025. Authorities estimate the network may have helped between 400 and 600 migrants reach France during that period.
Investigators also uncovered financial transactions allegedly connected to the smuggling activities. Officials believe payments were transferred through intermediaries in several countries, particularly Brazil, to support the movement of migrants along the route.
The suspect was arrested last Monday and later placed under formal investigation. Prosecutors allege that he operated a travel-related services company that offered migrants paid assistance to reach France. The business is also accused of promoting its services through digital messaging applications to attract clients.
French authorities said the investigation remains active and is being carried out in cooperation with Brazilian law enforcement agencies. Officials are working to identify other people who may have been involved in the suspected international smuggling network.
On Thursday, the suspect was brought before the judiciary and ordered to remain in pre-trial detention. He is expected to appear in court on September 3, where he will face charges of assisting the irregular entry, transit, or residence of foreign nationals in France as part of an organized criminal group.
