Minister for Labour Santosh S. Lad has officially opened a new housing complex for migrant workers at Sidlipura near Shivamogga. The project is aimed at providing safe and affordable accommodation for labourers working in the nearby industrial areas.
The complex was built by the Karnataka State Unorganised Workers’ Social Security Board at a cost of ₹29.5 crore. The goal is to improve the living conditions of workers and their families, many of whom come from different parts of the country to work in Shivamogga’s Devatikoppa industrial zone.
Spread across 10 acres, the housing complex includes both dormitories and family flats. The dormitories can hold up to 792 workers, while 36 flats have been built for families. Construction of the facility began in June 2022 and is now ready to house those in need.
How much do workers have to pay for this housing?
Workers will pay just ₹50 per day to stay in the dormitories. This low cost makes it easier for them to access safe and secure housing while working in the industrial area.
This project is part of a larger effort by the Karnataka government to support unorganised workers and ensure they have access to basic welfare. Minister Lad said the housing will not only provide shelter but also give workers a sense of security and dignity.
Local leaders, including MLA Sharada Puryanaik, MLA S.N. Channabasappa, and MLCs D.S. Arun and Dhananjay Sarji were present during the event. Their support reflects a joint commitment to improving labour conditions in the region.
The complex is also expected to help companies in the Devatikoppa area by ensuring workers have stable and nearby housing. This reduces travel stress and helps maintain a regular workforce for industries.
The government hopes this model can be expanded to other parts of Karnataka to benefit more workers in the unorganised sectors. With the success of this housing complex, more initiatives are expected soon.
