A record 128 migrants have reached the United Kingdom aboard a single small boat after crossing the English Channel, marking the largest number of people ever recorded on one vessel making the dangerous journey.
According to the UK Home Office, 225 migrants arrived in Britain on three boats on July 10, with one overcrowded vessel carrying 128 people. The crossing has heightened concerns about the increasingly dangerous tactics being used by migrant smuggling networks.
A Home Office spokesperson said criminal gangs are taking greater risks by packing more people into unsafe boats to maximize profits.
“Smuggling gangs are taking greater risks than ever, with the number of people they are cramming into unseaworthy boats rising year on year,” the spokesperson said, adding that the latest crossing demonstrates the gangs’ disregard for human life and the dangers migrants face in the Channel.
The previous record for the highest number of migrants on a single boat was 125, set in September last year.
Despite the record-breaking crossing, overall small boat arrivals in the UK have continued to decline. Government figures show that nearly 12,500 migrants have crossed the English Channel so far this year, representing a 44 percent decrease compared with the same period last year and a 12 percent drop compared with the first half of 2024.
Authorities expect additional crossings in the coming weeks as calmer summer weather creates more favourable conditions for small boats departing from the French and, to a lesser extent, Belgian coast.
The UK government has continued to strengthen measures aimed at disrupting irregular migration and dismantling people-smuggling networks. Its strategy includes closer cooperation with European partners to prevent criminal gangs from obtaining equipment used to launch small boats.
Britain has also renewed its migration agreement with France, under which the UK will provide approximately €775 million over three years to support increased patrols along northern French beaches and strengthen efforts to prevent Channel crossings.
Alongside border enforcement measures, the government has expanded deportation efforts and announced plans to further simplify the removal of people who have no legal right to remain in the country.
The latest record crossing shows the continuing challenge facing British authorities as smugglers adapt their methods despite declining overall arrival numbers and intensified international enforcement efforts.
