In Austria, a dramatic rescue unfolded on Sunday 3rd iof March 2024 as authorities discovered a 14-year-old Syrian migrant stranded in the treacherous mountains along the border with Slovenia. The teenager, suffering from severe hypothermia and injuries, was found in a remote area known to be part of a new smuggling route into the country.
Austrian rescue teams swiftly sprang into action, responding to a distress call from a vigilant 61-year-old walker who heard the teenager’s cries for help. Located at an altitude of 1,200 meters near Bärengraben by Rosenbach, the young migrant was in a dire state when rescuers reached him. Reports from the scene described him as “severely hypothermic and barely reactive,” with injuries causing him significant pain.
The challenging terrain, characterized by patches of lingering snow and dense forests, posed additional obstacles for the rescue operation. Despite the efforts of the initial police helicopter being hampered by strong winds, a second helicopter was summoned, equipped with a special wire system to safely extract the teenager and transport him to a hospital in Klagenfurt for urgent medical attention.
Markus Harfmann, a manager with the local mountain rescue team, emphasized the critical timing of the rescue, highlighting that without the intervention of the walker who stumbled upon the stranded teen, the situation could have turned fatal. Harfmann underscored the harsh conditions and plummeting temperatures, stressing the boy’s vulnerability had he remained exposed overnight.
Authorities suspect that intensified border controls at conventional crossings have prompted smugglers to explore alternative, more remote routes into Western Europe, with the mountainous path between Slovenia and Austria emerging as a potential corridor for illicit activities. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the circumstances leading to the teenager’s perilous predicament, with previous incidents involving migrant families in the same area raising concerns about the prevalence of smuggling operations in the region.
Gerald Tatzgern, a member of the Austrian Police Authority specializing in combating human trafficking, noted the unusual nature of migrants traversing mountainous terrains on foot, suggesting it deviated from typical smuggling methods that often involve vehicular transport over shorter distances.
While the precise details of the teenager’s journey remain unclear, authorities expressed relief at his rescue and subsequent admission to intensive care in stable condition at the Klagenfurt hospital. However, police have yet to question him, leaving unanswered questions surrounding the events leading up to his harrowing ordeal.
