A recent report from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) brings attention to the growing risks faced by migrants traveling through the Sahel, especially those from sub-Saharan Africa. Ongoing conflicts in places like Sudan have made the journey even more dangerous, leaving migrants without proper protection.

For many refugees and migrants heading from sub-Saharan Africa to Europe, the journey is full of dangers. The UNHCR points out that the routes they take have become even riskier because they lack important services that could keep migrants safe.

Vincent Cochetel, a special envoy for the UNHCR, mentioned that they’re missing a key partnership with local authorities, which could help provide immediate help to migrants. He stressed that working with these local authorities is crucial for offering migrants the support they need.

Despite knowing where many migrants gather along their journey, the UN report shows that they still don’t have enough access to help, shelter, or information about the dangers they might face. This leaves migrants at a big risk of getting hurt or having to move again to find safety.

Crossing the desert is especially dangerous for migrants, not only from Africa but also from places like Asia and the Middle East. Many don’t realize how dangerous it is and end up dying while trying to cross. Some also face terrible treatment, like violence and abuse.

Cochetel highlighted the importance of focusing on places like Agadez in Niger, where many migrants pass through. Even though it’s risky, he said working with local authorities there could make a big difference in helping migrants stay safe and get the support they need.

With millions of people worldwide forced to leave their homes and millions more migrating internationally, the UNHCR and other groups are urging for better support and protection for migrants, especially in places where conflicts make their journeys even more perilous.
