French and British rescue teams have safely rescued 173 migrants after an overcrowded inflatable boat caught fire while attempting to cross the English Channel from France to the United Kingdom, marking one of the largest rescue operations involving a single small boat on the busy migration route.

The incident occurred on Tuesday after the vessel, which had departed from Veules-les-Roses near Dieppe on Monday night, suffered an engine fire close to the boundary between the French and British search-and-rescue zones. The emergency prompted a large-scale international rescue operation involving French rescue vessels, two UK Border Security Command boats, an RNLI lifeboat and a French rescue helicopter.

All 173 people aboard the vessel were safely brought ashore in Boulogne-sur-Mer, northern France. French rescue officials confirmed that 11 migrants sustained minor injuries, including burns, bruises and cuts, but no serious injuries or fatalities were reported.

The number of passengers on board exceeded the previous record of 165 migrants carried by a single small boat that successfully reached the United Kingdom earlier this year, highlighting the increasing risks associated with overcrowded Channel crossings.

French authorities said they initially chose not to transfer passengers from the inflatable boat because of concerns that attempting an evacuation could cause the fragile vessel to capsize. However, once the engine caught fire and the condition of the boat deteriorated rapidly, emergency responders launched a full rescue operation to prevent a major tragedy.

Officials also confirmed that five people had been rescued earlier during the night after requesting assistance, while many of the remaining passengers initially refused rescue despite repeated offers from French patrol vessels. Authorities said the migrants were determined to continue their journey to Britain until the fire made the crossing impossible.

French prosecutors have opened an investigation into the incident, and an Egyptian national has been taken into police custody as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the attempted crossing and the suspected involvement of people-smuggling networks.

The UK government confirmed that British rescue vessels assisted the French-led operation after receiving reports of a migrant boat in distress. Officials described the rescue as another reminder of the dangers faced by people attempting to cross the English Channel in overcrowded and unseaworthy boats.

UK Justice Secretary Alex Norris said the incident demonstrated the reckless nature of criminal smuggling gangs that continue to organise dangerous crossings despite the serious risks to human life. A government spokesperson added that the rescue highlighted the urgent need for continued cooperation between the United Kingdom and France to disrupt trafficking networks and prevent further dangerous journeys.

The rescue comes as irregular migration continues to dominate political debate in both countries. According to provisional UK government figures, 14,561 migrants have crossed the English Channel in small boats so far this year, representing a 43 percent decrease compared with the same period in 2025.

Despite the decline in arrivals, the Channel remains one of Europe’s most dangerous migration routes. Data from the International Organization for Migration’s Missing Migrants Project show that at least 19 people have lost their lives attempting to reach the United Kingdom by sea or land routes since the beginning of 2026.

The latest rescue operation highlights the continuing humanitarian challenges facing authorities on both sides of the Channel as they seek to save lives, dismantle criminal smuggling networks and reduce dangerous irregular migration across one of the world’s busiest waterways.
