Bulgaria has intensified its efforts to combat smuggling activities across its border with Turkey, particularly concerning the transportation of equipment used for irregular crossings across the English Channel. For just over a year, AFP reported that Bulgarian authorities have seized significant smuggling equipment, including 52 motors, 49 rubber boats, 755 hand pumps, and 110 life jackets. These seizures were predominantly made from Turkish trucks passing through Bulgaria’s Kapitan Andreevo border post, one of the busiest entry points into Europe.
Customs and border authorities in Bulgaria are now actively monitoring trucks suspected of carrying items intended for irregular crossings and people smuggling operations across the English Channel. This heightened vigilance involves thorough inspections of westbound trucks using x-ray scanners and sniffer dogs trained to detect the smell of rubber, a crucial component of inflatable boats used in such crossings.
Cooperation between British and Bulgarian authorities prompted the crackdown on English Channel smuggling equipment passing through the Bulgarian-Turkish border. British officials raised concerns about the influx of small boats used for irregular journeys across the English Channel from France to the UK. In response, Bulgarian customs officers implemented measures to identify and track these boats, including leaving specific marks on outboard motors and coordinating with British partners to trace abandoned motors found on British shores.
Authorities discovered that the same boats seized at the Bulgarian-Turkish border were later used by smugglers orchestrating Channel crossings. Consequently, imports of small inflatable boats, motors, and life jackets into the EU were restricted. Customs officers have become adept at recognizing the unique shape of the engines and identifying bags containing folded dinghies, enabling more effective interception of smuggling attempts.
The UK has allocated significant funding for training customs personnel and providing equipment, such as surveillance drones, to enhance border security efforts. British Foreign Secretary David Cameron emphasized the importance of the partnership with Bulgaria in combating the “terrible trade in human beings” and preventing loss of life associated with illegal crossings.
Despite these efforts, the perilous nature of English Channel crossings persists, with several tragic incidents claiming the lives of migrants, including children, attempting to reach England. The UK’s interior ministry reported a significant number of migrants arriving on the shores of southern England via small boats in the first quarter of 2024, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced in addressing irregular migration and smuggling activities.
