Authorities in Ventimiglia are preparing to clear a migrant camp established along the Roya riverbank near the Italian-French border. Despite a decrease in migrant flows, local sources indicate that plans for eviction are underway.

The provincial committee for public order and security, led by Prefect Valerio Massimo Romeo, convened at the prefecture of Imperia on May 28. During the meeting, it was decided to initiate the clearance of the migrant camp along the Roya riverbank in Ventimiglia.

An urgent eviction order was approved by the committee, soon to be endorsed by Ventimiglia’s Mayor, Flavio Di Muro. The local administration is currently exploring alternative housing options for the migrants affected by the clearance. While an exact date for the eviction has not been communicated, sources suggest that it will likely take place after next month’s elections.

Simultaneously, owing to the reduced influx of migrants in the city, the police chief of Imperia, Andrea Nicola Lo Iacono, will reconsider regular police services. This includes the maintenance of police patrols, with a particular focus on individuals camping in the city center, especially near public areas after night closures, according to local authorities.

Regarding migrant flows, local sources report a significant decrease compared to previous years. Between March and May 2023, approximately 100 foreigners were pushed back daily at the border with France, with around 500 migrants present daily in Ventimiglia. However, this year, readmissions from France have dwindled to between 10 and 15 individuals per day over the same period.

Catholic charity Caritas, responsible for assisting families, minors, and vulnerable individuals, corroborates this trend. While their facilities can accommodate up to 30 people, they currently receive no more than 10 individuals daily, based on the latest data.

In anticipation of a potential increase in migrant flows, authorities have identified the former Ferrotel building in central Piazza della Stazione as a potential accommodation site for migrants. However, this measure will be contingent upon the resurgence of migrant arrivals in the area.
