A tense and dangerous situation unfolded in the Mediterranean Sea when masked men interfered with a rescue operation, causing panic among migrants and leading to a chaotic scene. The incident, which occurred in Libyan Search and Rescue (SAR) waters, has raised serious concerns about the safety of rescue missions and the treatment of vulnerable migrants at sea.

According to SOS Mediterranée, the non-governmental organization operating the rescue ship Ocean Viking, two unidentified zodiacs approached while they were in the process of saving 93 migrants from a wooden boat. The situation quickly escalated when two masked men boarded the migrants’ vessel, triggering widespread fear. In their panic, several migrants jumped into the water, putting their lives at risk.

This morning, #OceanViking rescued 93 people, incl. 4 women & 3 children, from a double-deck wooden boat. The Ocean Viking crew sprang into action, managing to rescue about 15 people from the water. Meanwhile, the masked men departed, towing away the now-empty wooden boat. This alarming incident left the rescued migrants in a state of shock and distress. One survivor even fainted on the deck of the Ocean Viking due to the extreme stress and hypothermia they experienced.

Despite the chaotic interruption, the Ocean Viking team successfully brought all 93 migrants on board their vessel. The group included four women and three children, highlighting the diverse and vulnerable nature of those attempting the perilous journey across the Mediterranean.

The drama didn’t end there. Shortly after this incident, SOS Mediterranée’s reconnaissance plane, Sea Bird, spotted another boat in distress. The Ocean Viking crew, demonstrating their commitment to saving lives at sea, rescued an additional 27 migrants from this second vessel. Interestingly, they received approval for this rescue from a Libyan patrol boat present in the area, though the Libyan authorities did not participate in the rescue themselves.

This incident has sparked heated debate in Italy, where migration issues are often at the forefront of political discussions. Riccardo Magi, Secretary of the pro-EU party +Europa, criticized the Italian government’s approach to migration control. He pointed out the irony of Italy hosting Libyan soccer matches while migrants were throwing themselves into the sea out of fear of being returned to Libya.

Magi argued that this event demonstrates the flaws in Italy’s strategy of relying on the Libyan Coast Guard to protect its borders. He expressed shock at Italy’s willingness to collaborate with the Libyan government, which he accused of terrorizing vulnerable individuals.

This disturbing incident sheds light on the complex and often dangerous reality of migrant rescues in the Mediterranean. It raises important questions about the role of various actors in these waters, the safety of rescue operations, and the treatment of migrants attempting to reach European shores. As debates continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the human lives at stake in the ongoing migration crisis in the Mediterranean region.
