The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) recently managed a successful operation to bring 166 irregular migrants back to their home country, the Gambia, from Tunisia. This repatriation took place on Wednesday and included six women among the returnees. The IOM’s office in Tunisia reported that these migrants will be provided with a special reintegration program when they return to the Gambia. This program is designed to help them adjust and integrate back into their communities smoothly.

The repatriation is part of a broader initiative known as the European Union Migrant Protection, Return and Reintegration in North Africa (MPRR-NA) program. This program was launched by the European Union in January 2023. Its main goal is to assist migrants in returning to their home countries and reintegrating into their communities while also tackling the issue of irregular migration from North Africa to Europe.

Tunisia has seen a significant rise in irregular migration, especially towards Italy. This increase is largely due to the country’s ongoing economic and political issues. In response to these challenges, the European Commission introduced a €127 million ($135 million) aid package for Tunisia in September 2023. This aid aims to help manage irregular migration and support development efforts within Tunisia.

The MPRR-NA program, which is funded by the European Union, plays a crucial role in this process. It provides support for both the return and reintegration of migrants, ensuring they receive the help they need to start anew in their home countries.

The reintegration program offered by the IOM in the Gambia will include various forms of support to assist the returning migrants in adjusting to life back home. This support is essential for helping them rebuild their lives and contribute positively to their communities.

Overall, this repatriation effort and the associated support programs are vital steps in addressing the complex issue of irregular migration. They highlight the ongoing commitment of international organizations and the European Union to managing migration flows and supporting affected individuals.

The aid package from the European Commission reflects the importance of addressing both the immediate needs of migrants and the broader economic and political challenges contributing to irregular migration. By providing this support, the EU aims to foster stability and development in regions affected by migration pressures.
