Portugal has introduced a new programme called Programa Integrar to support migrants seeking employment through the national Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP). This initiative aims to assist those who are currently unemployed, looking for their first job, or seeking a career change. It also provides help to those interested in accessing vocational training. The programme offers a range of services including skills recognition, training, and job search assistance, helping migrants navigate the job market more effectively.

The government highlighted the importance of welcoming and integrating migrants, particularly in light of the country’s ageing population and the shortage of workers in many critical sectors. Programa Integrar is designed to address these challenges by offering resources that support migrants in overcoming cultural and professional barriers. The goal is to help them develop the skills needed to successfully enter the workforce and contribute to the economy.

An important aspect of the programme is the individualised support provided by the IEFP. Migrants will undergo an initial assessment through an in-person interview to evaluate their needs and career goals. Based on this, a personalised employment and training plan will be developed. The programme will also assess the participants’ existing educational and professional qualifications, assisting them in obtaining recognition where necessary, and ensuring they meet Portuguese standards.

In addition to job placement and training, Programa Integrar also aims to educate migrants about their rights and responsibilities within public employment services, especially for those receiving unemployment benefits. The IEFP is set to reveal the full operational details of the programme later this month, outlining the specific steps to help migrants integrate into the Portuguese job market.

This initiative is a crucial step for Portugal in addressing its workforce needs while ensuring that migrant communities are welcomed and integrated into society.
