A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Libya when a boat carrying 13 migrants capsized, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals. The boat was reportedly en route to Europe and capsized approximately 60 kilometers from the Libyan city of Tobruk. The sole survivor was rescued and brought ashore, while the bodies of the deceased were recovered by local authorities and a humanitarian organization.

The humanitarian group Al-Abreen, which aids migrants in Libya, shared the news on Facebook, stating that the boat overturned on the evening of October 28. The migrants were believed to be from Egypt and Syria, highlighting the diverse nationalities of those risking their lives for a better future in Europe.

The Directorate for Combating Illegal Migration in Tobruk confirmed the incident. Libya has become a significant transit point for irregular migrants attempting to reach Europe due to its geographic location along the southern Mediterranean. This route offers one of the shortest maritime paths to Italy, making it a frequent embarkation point for desperate migrants.

Unfortunately, the journey across the Central Mediterranean is fraught with peril. Migrants face not only treacherous sea conditions but also the threat of exploitation by criminal networks that thrive amid Libya’s ongoing political instability.

This recent tragedy follows another incident in September, where a migrant boat carrying 32 people capsized due to engine failure. One person died, and 22 others went missing, with only nine individuals rescued by the Tobruk coast guard.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the situation remains serious, with 962 migrants losing their lives and 1,563 reported missing off the Libyan coast in the previous year. In 2023 alone, around 17,200 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya.
