The Labour Welfare and Skill Development Department in Coimbatore has instructed employers of commercial establishments and private companies to register details of their migrant workers on the official portal. This initiative aims to create a comprehensive database to ensure adequate job security, and better living conditions, and address challenges related to migrant labor. Employers have been warned of strict action if they fail to comply with the directive.

Coimbatore, a major industrial hub in Tamil Nadu, is home to a large workforce from states such as Bihar, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand. Despite lakhs of migrant workers being employed across the district, gaps remain in documenting their details. As a step towards streamlining this process, the Labour Department has issued a circular mandating the collection and uploading of essential information.

Employers are required to obtain identity cards from workers and ensure that details like Aadhaar numbers, Aadhaar-linked phone numbers, bank accounts, native addresses, and educational qualifications are registered on the department’s portal at www.labour.tn.gov.in/ism. Employers are also tasked with providing workers with proper job security, housing, and sanitation facilities.

The government clarified that mandatory registration is crucial to address challenges like providing compensation to families when a worker dies at work or retrieving information during legal or criminal investigations. It has been reported that while 28,000 workers are already registered under the labour department, over one lakh workers are registered through the factories wing.

To facilitate this process, the Labour Welfare Department has announced special registration camps in key locations like Vellakinar, Sullivan Street, Pappampatti, Big Bazaar Street, RS Puram, Pollachi, Mettupalayam, Anaimalai, and Valparai starting November 29. Employers and workers are encouraged to use these camps to ensure compliance with the new directive.

For more information, employers can contact the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Labour in Coimbatore at 0422-2241136. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of migrant workers while addressing administrative inefficiencies.
