Thailand has extended work permits for Cambodian migrant workers by six months, allowing them to stay and work in the country until August 13, 2025. The decision, announced by Labour Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, also applies to workers from Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar. Employers can submit documents for permit extensions until February 13, 2027, with the option for an additional two-year extension.
This move is important for Thailand’s workforce stability, as the country currently has 2.4 million foreign workers. With 1.2 million already registered by the February 13, 2025, deadline, the extension helps businesses in agriculture, construction, and manufacturing retain their workforce without legal uncertainty. It also reduces administrative challenges for HR teams handling work permit renewals.
For Cambodian workers, who form a large part of Thailand’s labour force, the extension provides job security and a smoother work authorisation process. Out of the 1.3 million Cambodian migrants working abroad, 1.2 million are in Thailand, making this decision crucial for employment stability.
Thailand’s Department of Employment Director-General, Somchai Morakotsriwan, has urged employers to meet the deadline to avoid delays in processing applications. Businesses must act quickly to ensure compliance, as failing to do so could lead to legal issues for both employers and workers.
With many Cambodian workers also employed in Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong, this extension reflects Thailand’s reliance on migrant labour and its effort to maintain economic growth through flexible workforce policies.
