The town council of Cisterna, Italy, has decided to stand as a plaintiff in the trial of an Italian farm owner accused of intentionally causing the death of Indian migrant worker Satnam Singh. Singh, a 31-year-old farmhand, tragically lost his life on June 17 after suffering a severe workplace accident. His arm was severed while working in the fields near Latina, close to Rome. Instead of calling for medical help, his employer abandoned him outside his home in Cisterna, where he bled to death.
Authorities believe Singh’s life could have been saved if emergency services had been contacted in time. His death has sparked outrage, highlighting the exploitation and mistreatment of migrant workers in Italy’s agricultural sector. The case has drawn significant attention, with many calling for justice and stronger protections for vulnerable workers.
In response, Cisterna’s town council has taken legal action, emphasizing its commitment to defending foreign workers who face exploitation and inhumane treatment. Lawyer Maria Belli del Foro from Latina will represent the town council in court, offering her services for free. The first hearing is set for April 1 at the Court of Assizes in Latina.
According to the town council’s official statement, the alleged crime has deeply impacted the local community, damaging its values and reputation. The council believes it has a duty to stand for justice, particularly in cases where human dignity is at stake. Mayor Valentino Mantini stressed that this move reflects the town’s dedication to upholding human rights, fostering diversity, and ensuring a fair and just society for all.
