The United Kingdom has announced new plans to introduce Trump-style visa bans on some countries that are not cooperating with the return of migrants who have no right to stay in Britain. The government says these bans are part of wider reforms aimed at tightening the immigration system and making it harder for people without authorization to remain in the country.
Britain’s Interior Minister, Shabana Mahmood, is expected to announce the full plan, which includes major changes to the asylum system. One of the biggest changes is that refugee status will no longer be permanent. People who get refugee protection will now have to wait 20 years before they can apply for permanent settlement in the UK. This marks one of the toughest immigration shifts the country has seen in many years.
Another part of the plan targets Angola, Namibia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The UK says these countries are refusing to take back more than 4,000 people, including unauthorized migrants and foreign criminals. Because of this, the British government will bar their citizens from entering the UK if cooperation does not improve.
A common question people ask is: Why is the UK taking such a strict step? The answer is that the government believes countries should accept their citizens who are ordered to leave the UK. When they refuse, it blocks the removal process and increases pressure on the UK’s asylum and immigration systems. The government says the penalties are meant to encourage these countries to follow international rules.
The countries involved will have one month to start cooperating. If they do not, the UK will introduce penalties in stages. These penalties could even include removing fast-track visa services for diplomats and VIPs. In the final stage, all citizens of those countries could be completely blocked from receiving UK visas.
Speaking on the issue, Mahmood said that Britain “plays by the rules” and expects other nations to do the same. She warned that countries refusing to take back criminals and illegal immigrants will face consequences. She stated that accepting the return of their citizens is a responsibility, not a choice.
These visa bans are similar to actions taken by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who imposed strict measures on several African and Asian countries during his first term. The UK government has made it clear that it is willing to take bold steps if cooperation does not improve.
Border Security Minister Alex Norris also said that more countries could face similar measures in the future. When asked if India could be affected, he did not rule it out, even though the UK and India recently signed a free-trade agreement. Norris said the UK is reviewing all agreements to make sure there is strong cooperation on immigration matters.
