The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has begun implementing a new project in Belarus aimed at strengthening the country’s ability to respond to a possible increase in migrant arrivals at its borders. The project focuses on improving preparedness, coordination, and migration management systems, especially in situations where border pressure may rise.
The initiative, titled “Strengthening the Capacity of the State Border Committee of the Republic of Belarus in Response to a Possible Increase in Migrant Arrivals at the Border,” is being carried out in cooperation with Belarusian authorities. According to information released by the State Border Committee, the project is designed to support state institutions in handling migration challenges more effectively and in line with international standards.
As part of the project, a meeting of a technical expert group was recently held. The meeting brought together representatives from several key institutions on the Belarusian side, including the border service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Ministry of Emergency Situations. Non-governmental organizations also took part, highlighting the project’s inclusive and multi-agency approach.
During the meeting, participants discussed future areas of cooperation and shared views on how Belarus can better respond to migration-related challenges. IOM experts presented a detailed plan to assess the country’s existing legal framework and practical procedures related to migration management and border response.
Special attention was given to the current migration management system in Belarus and the specific roles played by different state bodies. Discussions focused on how institutions can work together more effectively when dealing with various categories of migrants, including those in vulnerable situations.
The State Border Committee described the working meeting as an important step toward building a coordinated and rights-based approach to migration governance. Officials noted that improving cooperation between state agencies and international partners is key to managing migration pressures in a humane and organised manner.
The project reflects IOM’s broader mission to support countries in developing fair, efficient, and well-structured migration systems. By strengthening institutional capacity and promoting respect for migrants’ rights, the initiative aims to improve both border management and humanitarian responses.
Authorities say further activities under the project will continue in the coming months. These efforts are expected to help Belarus enhance its readiness for potential migration flows while aligning national practices with international migration standards.
