The central police department in the Italian city of Bari, located in the southern region of Puglia, has officially opened a new waiting room for migrants who need to access immigration services. The initiative aims to reduce long queues outside the immigration office and improve the overall experience for foreign citizens who visit the facility.
The waiting room was inaugurated on December 22 and is specifically intended for migrants who already have scheduled appointments at the immigration office. While the project may appear small, officials and local leaders say it will have a meaningful impact on the daily lives of migrants who often face long waits in uncomfortable conditions.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Bari Mayor Vito Leccese described the space as a symbol of humanity and respect. He said that although the room may be “a drop in the ocean,” it represents an important step toward dignity, solidarity, and civil responsibility. According to him, the new waiting room reflects Bari’s commitment to welcoming people and treating everyone with respect.
Local Prefect Francesco Russo also highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating that true hospitality begins with dignity. He explained that the opening of the waiting room sends a strong message about the values of the region, especially in southern Italy, which has long been on the front line of migration flows into the country.
The new waiting room can accommodate up to 28 people at a time and includes a dedicated space for children. To make the environment more comfortable for families, the municipal administration has committed to providing children’s books and toys, helping young migrants feel more at ease while waiting.
Previously, migrants often had to stand outside the police department for long periods to submit applications or collect residence permits, regardless of weather conditions. With the new facility, they can now wait indoors in a safer and more comfortable environment, reducing stress and improving access to services.
The waiting room will operate during the same hours as the immigration office, ensuring that migrants can use the space whenever they attend official appointments.
In an official statement published on its website, the central police department said the project represents a concrete effort to improve the quality of services offered to foreign citizens. The statement explained that the space was designed to welcome, inform, and guide users functionally and respectfully.
The police department also stressed that the initiative is part of a broader commitment by the State Police to promote security through inclusion, listening, and respect. Authorities emphasized that welcoming migrants and addressing their needs is essential for peaceful coexistence and for building a more united and cohesive community.
