A 23-year-old Ethiopian man has been charged with sexual assault following an incident at a hotel used to house asylum seekers in Southampton, southern England. The charge was confirmed by Hampshire Constabulary, which said the case is being treated with seriousness and urgency.
The alleged incident took place on Friday, January 16, at the Highfield House Hotel, located on Highfield Lane. The hotel is one of several across the UK currently being used to accommodate asylum seekers while their immigration claims are assessed by the Home Office.
According to police, the alleged victim is a member of staff working at the hotel. The incident was reported to authorities on Monday morning, two days after it is believed to have occurred. Once the report was received, police officers immediately attended the hotel to secure the scene, take statements, and begin initial enquiries.
Following investigations at the location, officers identified and arrested Melaku Gebresembet, an Ethiopian national aged 23. Police confirmed that he was subsequently charged with sexual assault and has been remanded in custody.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said:
“Officers investigating a sexual assault on a staff member at Highfield House Hotel have charged a man. Following the report, officers attended the hotel immediately to take statements and identify and arrest the alleged suspect.”
The police added that Gebresembet, who is listed as residing on Highfield Lane in Southampton, is due to appear before Southampton Magistrates’ Court. No further details about the court hearing have yet been made public.
At this stage, authorities have not released specific information about the circumstances of the alleged assault, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation and the need to protect those involved. Police have also not confirmed whether additional charges could follow.
