In a heated exchange during their recent presidential debate, U.S. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump clashed over immigration policies, each blaming the other for the ongoing challenges at the U.S.-Mexico border. The debate highlighted their sharply contrasting approaches to border security and immigration reform.

Trump criticized Biden for the increase in illegal crossings and accused him of opening up the border to individuals with criminal backgrounds. In response, Biden pointed to a 40% decrease in illegal crossings since his administration implemented executive orders aimed at tightening border security. He emphasized that his policies were making a positive impact and reducing the number of illegal entries.

Moderator Jake Tapper questioned both candidates about their plans to address the immigration crisis. Biden defended his administration’s efforts in reforming border policies through bipartisan agreements and executive actions. He argued that these efforts were necessary to create a fair and humane immigration system while maintaining border security.

Trump criticized Biden for ending Title 42, a public health law that allowed for rapid expulsion of migrants during the COVID-19 pandemic. He alleged that ending Title 42 led to increased border crossings. Biden countered that his administration had replaced Title 42 with more effective measures to manage the border while respecting human rights.

The debate also touched on Trump’s promise to deport millions of undocumented immigrants if re-elected. However, specifics on how this would be achieved remained unclear. Biden dismissed Trump’s claims as fearmongering and misinformation, arguing that mass deportations were not practical or ethical.

Elizabeth Vaquera, an expert on immigration issues, dismissed Trump’s deportation plans as impractical, emphasizing the logistical challenges and ethical concerns surrounding mass deportations. She noted that such plans would be difficult to implement and could lead to significant human rights violations.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security, visited the Tucson border sector to assess ongoing enforcement efforts. The Biden administration faced criticism from Republicans for perceived leniency in border controls. In response, Biden issued executive orders aimed at reducing illegal crossings. Since these orders were implemented, U.S. border agents reported a significant decline in daily encounters with migrants, attributing it to stricter enforcement and expanded legal pathways for migrants.

The Biden administration’s asylum policies have also seen changes, leading to a decrease in asylum claims and legal challenges from migrant advocacy groups seeking to reverse these restrictions. Biden defended his asylum executive orders, arguing they were necessary to manage the complexities of immigration, contrasting them with Trump’s previous policies such as the Muslim ban.

Throughout the debate, Trump portrayed the border situation as chaotic under Biden’s leadership. In contrast, Biden criticized Trump for policies that resulted in family separations and criticized the outdated state of U.S. immigration laws. Despite the ongoing debate and attempts to reform immigration laws over the years, significant legislative changes have eluded lawmakers for nearly four decades, leaving the issue unresolved.
