Every year, thousands of migrants embark on harrowing journeys from the Horn of Africa, braving the perilous waters of the Red Sea in search of better opportunities in Gulf countries. Regrettably, the UN migration agency deemed this route one of the “most dangerous migratory routes in the world.” It takes a heavy toll on those who dare traverse it, with Djibouti as a critical point of departure and transit.
Recently, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported a heartbreaking incident off the coast of Djibouti, where a ship carrying migrants encountered distress, leading to the loss of at least 38 lives. The vessel, believed to have departed from Yemen, was ferrying migrants from Somalia and Ethiopia who hoped to return to Djibouti in their quest for safety and stability.
Yvonne Ndege, a spokesperson for the IOM, provided insights into the tragic event, revealing that despite rescue efforts, six individuals remain missing and are feared dead. Additionally, 22 survivors were retrieved from the wreckage, offering a glimmer of hope amid the somber aftermath of the disaster. However, hopes of finding more survivors diminish with each passing hour as the treacherous waters refuse to yield their secrets.
The circumstances surrounding the ill-fated voyage underscore the immense risks faced by migrants seeking passage to Saudi Arabia via Yemen, with many falling prey to the perils of the journey.
